Following on from my earlier post enthusing about the YouTubing of The Tube, here's another in an occasional series plucking gems from the back catalogue.
Today it's from the last ever Tube, episode 24 of series 5, broadcast 24th April 1987; they closed in some style, Paula bookending a three-song set from The Cure: Catch, Why Can't I Be You and Hot Hot Hot. It would be almost nine years until The Tube's spiritual successor, TFI Friday, debuted. A big hole, largely unfilled.
Unfortunately, the full episodes of The Tube got pulled from YouTube before I got anywhere near series 5, so I missed the last ever episode and I'm not sure I saw it first time around, either. What a performance!
ReplyDeleteHaving watched the first episode of TFI Friday again on YouTube, I still feel it really was the poor cousin of The Tube at its peak. Then again, I was bored to tears by Ocean Colour Scene, Oasis and Kula Shaker, who Chris Evans loved so much, so I clearly wasn't the target audience...!
Yes, there is an element of TFI being a bit too pleased with itself, I think. But then it was the mid 90s, when nearly everyone was a bit too pleased with themselves...
DeleteGreat band to finish with,I remember playing the Kiss Me album to death on my cassette Walkman. It was either during or just after O levels if I remember correctly. A shame that todays world has rendered any future chance of shows like this ever returning fairly negligible.
ReplyDeleteA shame indeed. I really feel there's a gap in the market for a show like this, still ... but then I guess the audience is us, not today's youth. It's YouTube and streaming on demand for them, isn't it? Why have Jools and Paula presenting you with stuff when you can create your own YouTube playlist at the click of a mouse or touch of a screen. A shame, I think.
