Tired

Found myself earlier trying to remember when I last felt physically well. I'm not entirely sure but I think it was something like three years ago.

These days, it's the beginnings of arthritis in both knees, a stress fracture in my foot that won't heal and, just lately, something painful and musculoskeletal going on around my ribs.

Talking to my dad at Christmas, he looked wearily at me over the kitchen counter and said, "There's nothing, nothing about getting old that isn't shit." I can see where he's coming from, I think. I don't entirely agree, but then he has got more than 30 years on me...

  1. A line from 'Mother's Little Helper' popped into my head after reading this and now won't go away. "What a drag it is getting old"....

I do hope your aches and pains ease up at the very least.

Whilst not the most cheery of quotes about old age I really like your dad's words. I'd really smile if I saw that on someone's kitchen wall in a fancy typeface. So much more honest than all that crap about learning to dance in the rain ;-)

    1. Yes - surely better, for the would-be dancers out there, to dance in the sun? Or at least the dry? Guess that doesn't make for a feeble metaphor though, does it...?

  2. My frail old Nan would quite often grab my arm for support, pull me close and whisper in despair, 'Don't ever get old'. I remember it vividly. I also remember shaking my head at the absurdity of the very notion. It was the mid-1970s, I was young and I wasn't ever going to get old. Here I am though, with all the associated aches and pains to prove it. 'What a drag it is getting old' indeed, but, as my 90 year-old Aunt reminded me only recently, it's better than the alternative.
Three years is a long time Martin, I hope your health takes a turn for the better soon.

    1. Ah yes, definitely better than the alternative! Feels like one thing after another some times but cheers, am certainly looking forward to looking more like my normal self at some point soon.

  3. It is rubbish isn't it having to deal with these aches and pains - My other half makes up a concoction of turmeric/pepper and boiled water for us daily. I was sceptical but I now notice the difference if we've missed a day. Just a suggestion.

    1. Interesting - turmeric is an anti-inflammarory, isn't it?

    2. Yes it is - Natural and as powerful as over the counter anti-inflammatories (so he says). The pepper also increases the beneficial component apparently! Worth a try?
