There's a woman who works in the same wing of the same floor of the same building as me. She's in a different department, a different team, and our respective jobs do not overlap in any way. We share a kitchen where we both make tea, and use the same printer, but that's about it. I only know her name because it's on her office door. She doesn't know mine, because my office is at the far end of a dead-end corridor (insert own joke here) and you'd never walk past it unless you were coming to see me. We have never spoken.
Except.
If she passes me in the stairwell, she always says hello.
Weird, no?
Outrageous! Someone should put a stop to this sort of thing, it could catch on.
ReplyDeleteI know, whatever next? I mean, I barely talk to people I know, let alone people I don't. Down with this sort of thing! ;)
DeleteEngage her in conversation about something niche and she'll soon stop saying hello.
ReplyDeleteHa! I think if I ever said more than just a mumbled "Hi" in return, that would be the end of such unnecessary conviviality.
Delete:)
DeleteYou are obviously mistrusting of anyone who says hello who you think doesn't know you. Maybe it's because I come from a village but I would never pass anyone in a stairwell without saying hello. It would feel weird not to. So, she either comes from a village or she simply likes the cut of your jib!
ReplyDeleteIn which case she must come from a village.
DeleteIt's the same here, Alyson - odd if someone *doesn't* say "hello" when they pass you on pavement or pathway - you can usually tell who are townie daytrippers by their very deliberate avoidance of any eye contact!
DeleteBut it's a busy, bustling stairwell, I'd be saying "Hello, hello, hello, hello ..." and that would never do :)
DeleteThen it's definitley the cut of your jib! :-)
DeleteNew Amusements: jib uncut since 2005.
DeleteI was expecting a Lionel Richie video clip!
ReplyDeleteNew Amusements: Richie-free since 2005.

ReplyDeleteYou say she doesn't know you, but in these days when there's so much info out there waiting to be discovered.......(you are, after all, a published author).
True... although if she's familiar with me through my scant and mostly-forgotten published works that would be (a) a miracle and (b) disconcerting!
