Cover Charge #26: Nancy Sinatra to Morrissey

Cover Charge is simple: A covers B, B covers C, C covers D and so on, until I loop back to where I started, Ouroboros-style.

Last time: Soft Cell to Nancy Sinatra

I thought long and hard about whether to include this cover. For some, Morrissey is done, and understandably. Even I, a long=time apologist, am tired - disappointed and tired - but I can't leave the music that has been so much to me, for so long, behind. Here then is Nancy's cover of SPM's Let Me Kiss You, complete with the man himself on backing vocals during the chorus and middle eight. If I remember correctly, his band of the day accompanied her on this too. Perhaps no surprise it's such a Straight Bat, then.

Because this is the way Cover Charge works, and with apologies to those that don't anymore, here's Steven's original version, from 2004's You Are The Quarry. Music by the quiet genius that is Alain Whyte.

Next time: well, he was a Smith...

The Cover Charge "chain" to date.

  1. Setting aside the whole Morrissey-art-versus-artist stuff, I still think Let Me Kiss You is a really beautiful song and I had no idea it had been covered by Nancy. But it works really well and will perhaps it can become my more palatable go-to version...

    1. Art vs artist, it's tricky. Tricky, tricky, tricky. But yes, this is a lovely cover, I think, and suits her careworn voice so well.

  2. Thanks for this!. Can't wait for the next installment. Though I like Nancy's cover, no one, as with Leonard Cohen, improves on Morrissey's songs; his lyrics are his and even if someone else sings them the same, the take-away isn't the same.
By the way, why do you refer to Morrissey as "SPM" and "Steven"? He doesn't go by or answer to any of those labels. He is Morrissey.

    1. Good question, and a good point. It's just a habit I've picked up to try to appease those online who are easily angered by any mention of him - I figure if I use his actual name less, then I'm less likely to turn up in search results and so less likely to incur any wrath. I've already drafted tomorrow's post (predictably enough, "Morrissey covers someone") but will check it over before I publish, and make sure I haven't used any inappropriate aliases. As you rightly say, he is Morrissey.

    2. You know, I'd used SPM again in tomorrow's draft, now amended. Thanks for calling me on this.

    4. Cheers, Jimmy, and no negativity felt here. Glad you enjoy the blog and, as a relatively new commenter, I should probably say, "Welcome!"
