Today's long song is from Athens' finest, REM. They were at the start of their career's downhill section by parent album New Adventures in Hi-fi, which might sound a bit harsh until you remind yourself that REM's downhill is still at a hell of an altitude, far, far higher than that reached by most bands.
I think this is the longest original track they released, but I might be wrong on that. Someone will tell me, no doubt.
Last REM album I was 100% on with, some ace songs on this even if it feels a bit disjointed in places.
ReplyDeleteI liked that it felt like a conscious response to the enormity/mania of Out Of Time, Automatic For The People, and Monster. And I agree, its a damn fine album...
Delete...not Green, though, is it? I think a case can be made for Green being their best album. Maybe I'll blog that case some day.
A marvellous album, as indeed is Green. Not sure if it's their best though. I look forward to a lively discussion!
ReplyDeleteThe more I think about this, the more I realise how much I love Reckoning. Having a lively discussion already...with myself!
DeleteGreen is my favourite, as I think I've said before, followed closely by Out of time. New Adv is one of those albums I really didn't like at the time, but it grew on me a lot over the years.
ReplyDeleteAh, some more love for Green, excellent. This one could run and run...
