Blue Friday - People Ain't No Good

A cover of Nick Cave by Camille O'Sullivan, as used to close the excellent but nevertheless-cancelled Jo Brand and Alan Davies comedy drama Damned.

  1. I didn't know Damned had been cancelled. Shame (even though I found it hard to watch at times!) Do we know why?

    1. No, maybe the commissioners at C4 have lost it. Other shows with lesser ratings have been continued, which is annoying. Maybe it just doesn't tick the right boxes.

  2. Channel 4 have a bizarre relationship with comedy. I still do not understand why they chose to cancel Raised by Wolves which had healthy viewing figures and critical praise. It even scored highly in the Radio Times poll of Best Sitcoms Since The Millennium.

It's doubly frustrating that Damned has effectively been cancelled twice. It was initially on offer with Sky after a pilot there but Sky refused and 4 stepped into the breach. Now 4 have cancelled it.

The only response 4 ever gives about cancelling sitcoms (or indeed any other type of programme) is that they want to find new talent and believe that a couple of series is enough before they need to change things up a bit. This would be fine, if it wasn't so blatantly untrue - after all, Man Down and Friday Night Dinner are commissioned repeatedly and are well into their 5th series or thereabouts.

Anyway, I liked Damned, and I like this cover.

    1. Frustrating is right. Damned was good, and shone a light on a lot of contemporary issues. Oh well.
