Number 1 when England lost their Euro '96 semi-final was Killing Me Softly by Fugees (yes, really - Three Lions was number 2 that week).
Number 1 when England lost their Italia '90 semi-final was the double A-side Sacrifice/Healing Hands by Elton John (yes, really - Nessun Dorma was number 2 that week, World In Motion was at 6).
So... here's the number 1 from 30th July 1966, when Jules Rimet really was still gleaming.
Good luck tonight, lads - hope you're not out of time come the final whistle.
I remember Frank Skinner's incredulity of being number 2 that week on Fantasy Football League. 'The Fugees? They sound like The Bee Gees in hot weather'
ReplyDeleteExcellent from Frank, as usual.
DeleteStill, I doubt he ever imagined being #1 with it in 2018...
Despite being Scottish, I am really excited about tonight's match - To have a home nation get this far is really something. What is scary, is that it really doesn't feel like 22 years since the original Three Lions, but getting that feeling more and more nowadays. Heck I still remember the excitement of collecting those little silver coins the petrol stations gave out ahead of the 1970 World Cup - Back Home/Coming Home, cross-fingers it happens.
ReplyDeleteWhat's really scary is that 1990 is now longer ago than 1966 was in 1990...
DeleteIt's been a long-held belief in this household that Chris Farlowe looks a little too much like Jennifer Saunders for comfort....
ReplyDeleteNow you've said that, I can't unsee it.
