Someone who knows better will probably correct me, but I think this was just about the first song he recorded as David Bowie (rather than as Jones or under any other name), in 1966. The version featured here, however, was recorded and broadcast on this exact day in 1999, on the Mark Radcliffe show on Radio 1. And it's ace.
Oh wow, it's a great song anyway, but I LOVE this version and have no memory of ever hearing it before. Thanks, Martin. Talking of Bowie (just in case you hadn't seen), 'Moonage Daydream' is on Ch4 tonight - looking forward to watching it.

DeleteBrilliant! He also re-recorded the song in the studio for the 'Toy' project the following year, although it remained officially unreleased until 2021. The new version of 'Conversation Piece' on 'Toy' is among my favourite Bowie performances.
