I caught a little snatch of this on Lauren Laverne's 6 Music breakfast show the other day - just enough to think, "Oh, didn't realise Stevie Nicks had recorded something new?"
The Stevie thing is, of course, a lazy, semi-accurate comparison on my part, based solely on the tremulous warble in Katy's voice. But this, Talk Over Town, with its bright guitar rhythms and dark lyrics, is alright, isn't it? I mean, if you must listen to some new music, as others tell me I really should now and again, why not this?
Oh I heard this the other day on 6 too and made a mental note of it (actually I scribbled it down too as my mental notes tend to get lost). Really like it. I don't know much about her other than she's from the West Country but a friend had put a track on a playlist for me some time ago and the name stuck with me - I also really like 'Miracle' if you've not heard that yet. She has that lovely characteristic quiver in her voice (as you say, a bit Stevie Nicks-ish)
ReplyDeleteI've not heard Miracle but will investigate.
DeleteI loved Katy's fist album 'Return' - one of my top five records of 2020 in fact. The Stevie Nicks comparison is one of the things that drew me to her. Just booked tickets to see her in the autumn.
ReplyDeleteNice! The only gigs I seem to go to these days are to see the same bands I've been seeing for the last thirty years...
DeleteI heard her for the first time via "Take Back The Radio" on a compilation and then discovered the music she'd already released. She's supporting First Aid Kit as part of Bristol Sounds at the end of June - something of a hometown gig - and I'm sorely tempted to get a ticket
ReplyDeleteWell if you do, I look forward to reading about it afterwards.
