I can't remember exactly which ones I had but thinking about it now I realise that I didn't have a proper Sony Walkman at first, instead one of those made by someone else - I'm thinking Sanyo... Whatever, the whole concept of a personal cassette player was just so exciting.
So you still have yours- do you still have the first cassettes you played in it too?
My first personal stereo wasn't a Sony either, but a shop's own brand effort - the headphones had obligatory orange foam pads, and a hinge on the blue plastic door broke very quickly (I glued it back together). No, this was my last personal stereo (until I bought this, I suppose). And I still use it, if I need to digitise an old tape - so much easier to hook up to a laptop than my Sony TCK-611S cassette deck (which may get its own blog post some day - a domestic cassette with Dolby-S and, with metal tape, a signal-to-noise ratio of 84dB, i.e. approaching low-end CD players of the time... sorry, geeking out...)

Ah of course - I remember the post and the similar memories of our beloved cassette compilations. When I think of portable cassette players I only think of commercial cassettes for some reason - nothing logical, just the way the memories have filed themselves in my brain. E.g. I vividly remember playing Grace Jones' Nightclubbing tape on it at college one specific lunchtime, but I don't know why, there was nothing else special going on.
DeleteI have very few cassettes now. And, sadly, I ditched all the ones a very good friend of mine sent me - along with the accompanying letters. I've ditched a lot of things over the years. But he is still a very good friend!
Headphone with orange foam pads - oh yes. They didn't have much padding, if I remember rightly. I'd forgotten those until now. I think my very first one - before the Sanyo - might have been a Rumbelows own model.

DeleteI think mine was an Alba and I loved it. The metal earphones with the foam pads-thought they were properly cutting edge,and I guess they were. I remember the first cassette Walkman I had where if you waved it around a bit the sound would oscillate wildly! Although I have music on phone and mp3 players now it's not a patch on the fun and pride of clipping that Walkman on your belt.
